For the Anti-displacement studio, we partnered with the Alliance for Community Transit in LA to envision social housing in their city. Our team was tasked with studying the Koreatown neighborhood and researching how we can make our social housing model attractive, beneficial, and elegant for them. The Constellation is designed to be a scalable, replicable, community-driven model for social housing in Koreatown. We gave our plan this name because it was designed as a network of linked sites to accommodate Koreatown’s diverse population, providing housing for a wide range of age groups and family sizes. Koreatown is also one of the densest neighborhoods in Los Angeles, both in terms of the current population and in its zoning, so any social housing solution will need to focus on making the most of smaller lots as they become available instead of larger developments. Through the Constellation network, we aim to provide residents with a variety of decommodified, affordable, and high-quality social housing options across all stages of life.
