BOSTON ARTS CENTER
location | South End, Boston
date | Spring 2019
class | Urban Institutions
This project focuses on designing a school within an urban block that can engage public life while maintaining a creative and private space for students. The terraced landscape provides the city with a valley at the center of the site that directs foot traffic and keeps the buildings’ functions separate.
The Boston Arts Center has a public auditorium that can be accessed on street level by the community. This location also connects underground to the theater of the school. The stepping up of the building accommodates large studio areas and open space for students of all disciplines to converge. An interior terracing concept allows the atrium and lobby of the school to have an associating feature between all levels and classrooms. The result is architecture that serves a private and public program while creating an urban park.
